There are few places that are as breathtaking as their picture, but the Great Blue Hole in Belize is one. It is part of the Belize Barrier Reef System that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.

The entire area is beautiful! The water around it is shallow and aquamarine in color. Little patches of sand and seaweed almost break the surface and help to decorate the turquoise backdrop. While you can boat to the Blue Hole, and both snorkel and scuba, there were no boats in site. The waterscape looked pristine and perfect as we flew above it.

As our pilot circled us around, I felt such admiration for Mother Nature. The near perfect circle is 300 meters in diameter. The dark blue color is a result of the depth of 124 meters. The Great Blue Hole is a former cave; in the glacial period (about 150,000 years ago) the caves flooded and the roof collapsed forming the unique hole.

Jacques Cousteau declared it “one of the top ten dive sites in the world.” Surely it is magnificent, but since I don’t dive, I took in the beauty flying above.
